About uBC
History:
In 1862, in the midst of the Civil War, our ancestors gathered under a designated Cherry Tree on Butlers Hill (currently known as US Route 106) so that all who desired to come had a specific location to worship. They also gathered in various homes (during inclement weather) to praise God. After establishing a formal place to worship and under the leadership of Elam Baptist Church (the oldest black church in Charles City, Virginia), Union Baptist Church (UBC) became the third black church in the county. The first sanctuary was built in 1862, the second in the early 1920's, and the current sanctuary was built in 1962.
Union Baptist Church has been shepherded by ten Pastors over the years. The 8th Pastor, Reverend Luke Corbett served Union Baptist Church for nineteen years, and retired in 1970. On March 23,1979, Reverend Tommy Drayton was installed as the 10th Pastor of UBC. He lovingly served God, and the people of God for forty years, and retired on March 31, 2019, becoming Pastor Emeritus of Union Baptist Church.
The world is ever changing! To remain effective as a church in an ever-evolving world, our mission is to continually evaluate what we do as Christians. We strive to meet and serve people where they are, but never compromising the Word of God! We have 15 ministries available that are designed to further develop and empower members in their spiritual walk.
Our motto is: Putting God first...Learning to live for Christ!
As members of UBC and ambassadors of Christ, we commit ourselves daily to walk and serve Him in excellence.
God is coming back! Are you ready? Our mission is to prepare for His return! Come join us!
