Rationale for Study:

COVID-19 has undoubtedly changed life, religious routines and traditional services for Christians worldwide. It is uncertain concerning when this “new normal” will return to life before the pandemic. However, the church must still make real the mandate of our Lord: We must FEED the sheep in our pasture. This study is just another way to keep God’s people fed with spiritual lessons, rooted in Christlike behaviors and beliefs, and encouraged by explicit Biblical examples.

A second reason why this theme is so relevant involves the ungodly acts of counter racism, hatred, looting, violence and the mayhem that now threatens the stability of the American dream. The redeemed must not reach for the weapons in Satan’s arsenal.

“Again, and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force."

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"King's "soul force" isn't just non-violent and peaceful– it is also truthful, respectful and kind, in both words and deeds.”

There are two essential reasons why I teach based on books:

First, we only have an hour to present material, study significant scriptures, analyze subtopics and address concerns. Circumstances can and will happen that might prevent some from joining on Wednesdays. However, having a book provides a systematic and concrete way of remaining on task. We recognize that everyone desiring to study the bible are not all at the same place in their spiritual walk. Some are more advanced and others are just beginning to crawl in their new walk of faith. For this reason, a book can offer an independent approach to give each person a way to move at his or her own pace.

Secondly, I am an educator, trained as a professor, and teachers use books unapologetically.
The book that I recommended as a guide is not required, it is merely another tool that may enhance your study.  I will summarize, paraphrase and at times utilize the language of our “Newness in Christ” as reflected in scriptures, including the New Testament Gospels and epistles of the Great Apostle Paul, but I will also include historical and contemporary leaders, authors and scholars to keep participants thinking and engaged.

Bible Study Structure for Zoom Participants:

What we do must be done decently and in order (1 Corinthians 14:40).

For this reason:

  1. Everyone will remain muted during the Zoom session to maximize time in the lesson.

  2. Participants will be asked to submit questions to Dr. Fleming’s email address rflemin3@gmu.edu

  3. Answers will be presented

    • Sometimes in emails

    • Sometimes by telephone

    • Sometimes at the beginning of the next Bible study
